Signs Follow Believers

There is a passage in Scripture that many Christians quietly skip over. It sits at the end of the Gospel of Mark, bold and unapologetic, and it has a way of making people uncomfortable. Mark 16:17-18 describes a series of signs that will follow those who believe — casting out demons, speaking in new tongues, handling serpents without harm, and laying hands on the sick so that they recover. These are not timid promises. They are declarations of spiritual authority extended to every person who places their faith in Jesus Christ.

So why do so many believers live as though these verses do not apply to them?
The answer, more often than not, comes down to one word: doubt. Not the honest wrestling kind of doubt that leads a person deeper into faith, but the quiet, settled assumption that these signs were for another era, another group of people, another time in history. Satan has done a masterful job of convincing the church that the supernatural gifts described in Scripture were simply scaffolding used to build the early church — and now that the building is up, the scaffolding has been removed.

But consider this: if signs and wonders were only for Bible times, then by that same logic, so was salvation. The same book that records the miracles of Jesus records His death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins. You cannot selectively apply the Scripture to your life and call it faithfulness.

The Greatest Sign of All
Before exploring the more dramatic signs, it is worth pausing on the one that is most consistently overlooked: a changed life. Of all the miracles a person can witness, few are more compelling than watching someone be genuinely transformed by an encounter with Jesus Christ. The fruits of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control — are themselves a sign to a watching world that something real has happened on the inside of a person.

Jesus said that people would know His followers by their love (John 13:35). Not by their theology, not by their church attendance, not by their ability to quote Scripture, but by their love. Love is the first fruit of the Spirit, and it has a way of making all the other fruit accessible. When genuine love flows from a believer's life, it draws people. The world is desperate to be loved. Most people just do not know that what they are searching for has a name, and that name is Jesus.

Authority That Has Already Been Given
When a person accepts Christ, something profound happens legally and spiritually. Ephesians 1:5 speaks of believers being predestined for adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ. Adoption is a remarkable picture of the gospel because, unlike a natural-born child who can refuse an inheritance, an adopted child cannot be un-adopted. The covenant is sealed.

With that adoption comes a transfer of authority. John 14:12 contains one of the most staggering promises in all of Scripture — that those who believe in Jesus will do the works He did, and even greater works, because He was going to the Father. The authority Jesus carried during His earthly ministry was not retired when He ascended. It was distributed. It was given to His church, to every person who bears His name.

Think of it this way: when you are given someone's name, you are given the right to act on their behalf. When a person marries and takes a new name, they gain access to joint accounts, shared resources, and shared authority. The name of Jesus is not a magic word to be tossed around carelessly. It is a name that carries weight in the spiritual realm because of who Jesus is — and believers have been given the right to use it.

Praying Without Fear of the Results
One of the most liberating truths in the Christian life is this: God is responsible for the results of prayer. Our job is simply to pray. The verse in Mark does not say signs will follow those who achieve the right outcomes. It says signs will follow those who believe.

1 John 5:14-15 reinforces this, describing the confidence believers can have that when they ask anything according to God's will, He hears them — and if He hears them, they can trust that their petitions are received. The burden of outcomes does not rest on human shoulders. What rests on human shoulders is the willingness to step out in faith and pray.

This is where many believers get stuck. They do not pray for the sick because they are afraid the person will not be healed. They do not speak the name of Jesus over a difficult situation because they are not sure it will work. But that kind of thinking gets the arrangement exactly backwards. Fear of failure is not a reason to withhold prayer. It is a reason to pray more, trusting that God will do what only God can do.

Faith Before Signs
The verse in Mark is careful about the order of things. Signs follow those who believe. Faith comes first. Signs come after. This is not a small distinction. It means that the believer does not wait for a sign to stir up faith — the believer acts in faith and watches signs follow.
A mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds in the natural world. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith even that small is enough to move a mountain. The issue is rarely the size of the faith. The issue is whether the faith is being exercised at all.

The authority has been given. The name has been provided. The Holy Spirit has been sent as a helper and a guide. Every resource needed to walk in the fullness of what God has promised is already available to the believer.

The question is simply whether we will believe it enough to act on it.
Signs follow believers. Not because of human effort or religious performance, but because of the name above every name — and the God who still moves in power today.
